António José Seguro elected President
Seguro was elected this Sunday as Portugal’s new president, securing the highest number of votes in the country’s history.
With 66.92% of the vote and 3,482,481 ballots cast in his favor, the former socialist minister surpassed the record previously held by the late former president Mario Soares in 1991.
In his victory speech, Seguro pledged to serve as a president for all Portuguese citizens and to hold the government accountable.
The populist right-wing candidate, André Ventura, received 33.18% of the vote and vowed to now focus on his long-standing goal of becoming Prime Minister.
