Mondego’s dyke bursts in Coimbra
A dyke located on the right bank of the River Mondego burst this afternoon in Coimbra, specifically near the A1 viaduct, causing significant disruption. As a result of the breach, the motorway had to be closed in both directions between kilometres 189 and 198 to ensure public safety and allow emergency services to respond effectively. The local council had already anticipated the risk of levee breaches in this region due to recent weather conditions, prompting them to activate a comprehensive evacuation plan. This plan involved safely relocating around three thousand people from the affected and potentially vulnerable areas to prevent any casualties or further harm.
