Storm Marta to bring 100km/h winds
The National Commander of Civil Protection has urged the public to act with caution and to adopt safe behaviour, warning that carelessness could lead to further loss of life. Speaking during an early afternoon situation briefing, Mário Silvestre cautioned that weather conditions are expected to deteriorate further over the coming hours.
According to the official, Storm Marta is forecast to bring periods of heavy rainfall from Friday into Saturday, accompanied by strong winds that could reach speeds of up to 100 kilometres per hour. The adverse conditions may increase the risk of flooding and other weather-related incidents across several regions.
Mário Silvestre also reported that, despite the worsening forecast, no significant incidents linked to rising river levels were recorded overnight. The sole exception was the River Douro, which overflowed its banks, affecting riverside areas in the cities of Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia. Civil Protection authorities continue to monitor the situation closely and have reiterated their appeal for the public to remain vigilant and to follow safety guidance issued by the authorities.
